It's Comic Con season, and with major events such as London Film and Comic Con and San Diego Comic-Con coming up in the month of July, it's an exciting time for film, TV and comic fans everywhere. Comic Cons run worldwide throughout the year as this ever-growing collection of well established events has become one of, if not, the largest pop culture convention in the world.

With small comic book conventions first popping up in the 60s the biggest event on the calendar each year, San Diego Comic-Con, first started in 1970. It did not take long for San Diego Comic-Con to contribute majorly to cinema history when a guy called George Lucas handed out posters to promote his unreleased film 'Star Wars', I wonder whatever happened to him? I hope it worked out well. From the start Comic Cons have included Sci-Fi and Fantasy media of all kinds along with the Comic Book industry. The inclusivity of Comic Cons has grown over the years, with more and more TV shows and Films featured from a variety of genres. The fan base for these incredibly popular conventions has increased alongside the guest lists. The featured guests now include legendary names from the industry, as well as A-lister actors and actresses, drawing attention from around the world. The London Film and Comic Con started in 2004 attracting guests from major franchises such as Doctor Who and Harry Potter. Again this has grown further with guests from Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and many other internationally recognised guests.

Arguably the biggest foundations of the Comic Con industry are Marvel and DC, the giants of the Super-Hero genre. Throughout the 20th century Marvel and DC, amongst others, expanded from comics, to cartoons, and soon established themselves on the big screen. From 70s Superman, 80s Batman and the Marvel movies of the early 2000s, there has always been a large audience, and a passionate cult following behind these franchises. The ambitious Marvel project that started with Iron Man (2008) and is still running to this day, even after Endgame, has brought an even bigger crowd and increasingly high demand for the Super-Hero genre. Also with shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones moving from literature to television in the peak of the TV 'Golden Age',  fans have flocked to Comic Cons to meet their heroes and villiains from the small and big screen. With Cosplay now being a huge industry in its own right, and still being a massive part of the Comic Con culture, this pop culture phenomenon won't be going anywhere any time soon.
